Paolo Della Rocca, Italy – Nature Photographer Of The Year
Nestled in northern India, Spiti Valley is characterized by its rugged grandeur and serves as the habitat for one of the most elusive species in existence.
A long-held aspiration was realized during an extraordinary encounter with a pair of juvenile snow leopard siblings, which I had the esteemed opportunity to observe and photograph at various stages of their lives, states Paolo Della Rocca.
For this particular image, he endured over six hours at the brink of a canyon, facing a relentless snowstorm as temperatures plummeted to -°C. Once the storm abated, the leopards emerged from their shelter, playfully chasing one another down the slopes. And then arrived the moment: an impeccable frame capturing one of the most enchanting days of my life.

A small-spotted genet approaches a tranquil pond to drink and observes a group of small carp swimming beneath the surface. These elusive animals are sed predators, capable of hunting a wide variety of prey, including fish, frogs, mammals, birds, eggs, reptiles, and amphibians. Additionally, they are known to enjoy fruits, insects, and mushrooms found on the forest floor. “My intention was to connect these two environments, above water and below,” remarked Hannes Lochner.
Inquisitive Guanaco, Aded Highly Commended, Mammals category
Charles Janson, United States – Nature Photographer of the Year
“It was a frigid – degrees Celsius, so bitterly cold that we found ourselves enveloped in…
“Thick, frozen fog enveloped the surroundings,” remarks Charles Janson. “We were en route in search of a puma in the vicinity of Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. At that moment, I was on the verge of capturing a landscape photograph when a guanaco unexpectedly emerged over the rise, disrupting my otherwise immaculate composition.
“Shortly thereafter, another guanaco appeared, followed by several others. The leading creature exhibited signs of curiosity reminiscent of llamas. As it drew nearer, I patiently awaited the opportune moment when its presence would harmonize with the rest of the scene, allowing me to take this photograph.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the intricate tapestry of life woven beneath the surface of our natural world is a reminder of the delicate balance between diverse ecosystems. Hannes Lochner’s intention to bridge the connection between aquatic and terrestrial realms resonates deeply, as it highlights the adaptability and resourcefulness of various species, including the elusive predators and their varied diets. Just like Charles Janson’s striking image of the inquisitive Guanaco evokes curiosity about the mammals that roam our planet, we are reminded of the beauty and resilience found in nature’s intricate relationships. As we continue to explore and appreciate these connections, let us remain vigilant in our efforts to protect these habitats, ensuring that future generations can marvel at the wonders both above and below water.
