The th-century Bedford Post Inn, located in the northern portion of Westchester County, New York, offers a distinctive charm.

From The Cottages at Nantucket Boat Basin, one can occasionally hear the distant horn of the ferry arriving from Hyannis as it docks at a nearby pier. The only other sounds are generated by the gentle waves lapping against the yachts positioned in front of these cottages that line the wharves. A stay in one of these accommodations places guests in close proximity to the water while still remaining on solid ground. Following the completion of an extensive multimillion-dollar renovation this season, the interiors reflect a nautical theme harmonious with the picturesque surroundings.

Designed by esteemed local artisan Audrey Sterk, the color palette across the cottages features a refreshing combination of blue and white. Murals illustrate the city’s early settlers and its maritime heritage, showcasing full-masted schooners traversing the seas. Decorative elements include cage-style lighting reminiscent of nautical fixtures, wooden whale sculptures, which represent a significant aspect of Nantucket’s economy for nearly two centuries, brass barometers, mariner knots, and various woven textiles. Additionally, twelve of the cottages are outfitted with extra amenities: dog beds and bowls (including treats and tennis *****as they cater to pet owners.

Autumn ushers in cooler temperatures and a notable decrease in foot traffic along the stone-paved streets of the Historic District, where visitors seek out galleries, boutiques, and dining establishments. Some restaurants, including Born & Bread, operate year-round, while others, such as the highly acclaimed Topper’s, remain open until the end of October.

Another establishment in the White Elephant Resorts collection is The Wauwinet, alongside the Asian-inspired The Nautilus, and the newly introduced New American/global cuisine venue, Or, The Whale. Certain establishments have already suspended operations for the season (though they will briefly reopen for the traditional Christmas Stroll in early December), such as the seafood favorite Slip , located adjacent to the Cottages on Old South Wharf. However, for those who anticipate their visits, all locations will resume service in April. Additionally, the island is accessible within an hour’s flight from New York.

Located less than an hour’s journey from New York, whether by car or train, the Bedford Post Inn was established in and served as a stagecoach stop along the route connecting New York and Boston. Following its initial function, the establishment underwent several transformations, including various hospitality phases and a period as a private residence, before being purchased in by actor Richard Gere and his partner, Russell Hernandez. With recent renovations motivated by their partnership with the New York-based Sunday Hospitality, the inn now boasts a refreshed appearance, an upgraded restaurant, and enhanced amenities.
