Our journey initiated in Vientiane, commencing late in the morning via a Lao Airlines flight that lasted for an hour, ultimately reaching Pakse just in time for lunch. Subsequently, we embarked on an overland expedition to Don Det, encompassing a distance of approximately km. Upon reaching Nakasang, the final stop and nearest village to Don Det, we proceeded to board boats in order to transfer ourselves to the island. As we arrived, we were greeted by a captivating sight of the surroundings illuminated by the sunset cast upon the Mekong River. Within this picturesque setting, riverside resorts and bungalows offered us an ideal home base for exploring the archipelago of islands formed by the meandering river.

A fascinating display of natural beauty awaits on the expansive and swiftly flowing Mekong River. The islands of Don Det and Don Khon offer idyllic locations for those venturing into Si Phan Don, which includes the renowned Li Phi Waterfall. Don Det is connected to Don Khon via a bridge, and the road encircling these river islands has recently undergone improvements, ensuring its excellent condition throughout the year. Visitors have the option of utilizing local tourist vehicles or bicycles to embark on an exploration of the island’s attractions. Following an overnight stay on Don Det and a half-day excursion, the group departed from the island and proceeded to visit the Khon Phapheng Waterfall before making their way north of Champasak towards Paksong, a city in Laos.

In conclusion, our journey from Pakse to Don Det was truly an adventure of a lifetime. The overland expedition allowed us to witness the stunning landscapes of Laos, and reaching Nakasang and boarding the boats only added to the excitement. As we arrived on Don Det, we were treated to a breathtaking scene of the sunset reflecting on the Mekong River, setting the perfect backdrop for our exploration of the picturesque archipelago. It was here, amidst the riverside resorts and bungalows, that we found our ideal home base to truly immerse ourselves in the beauty of this unique destination.
