How to Create an Exceptional Afternoon on the Green Experience

The University of the Virgin Islands (UVIis proud to host its annual Afternoon on the Green event taking place from noon to pm, Sunday, March th, at the Herman E. Moore Golf Course on St. Thomas. This year’s installment carries the theme “A Burst of Culture, Fun & Cuisine at Afternoon on the Green “, providing a plethora of activities and entertainment for attendees to enjoy. This sought-after occasion not only serves as a fundraiser for student scholarships, but also provides the community an opportunity to celebrate local culture, cuisine, and talent.

Dr. Kyza A. Callwood, Ph.D., Chairman of the Event Planning Committee, remarked, “Let us strive to raise the bar each year”. We are particularly delighted to be reconvening in person, and look forward to seeing everyone at the gathering this Sunday. On the Main Stage we will feature leading local acts, such as Cool Session Brass, a renowned favorite amongst all constituents and a symbol of Caribbean prowess. Additionally, Shaw HP, an acclaimed Soca artist from Love City, St. John, shall also share the limelight. Further amusements include dancers and school groups from all walks of life, both adult and youth categories. (Note that the aforementioned program may be subjected to revisions.

It is with much anticipation that we present the scheduled events for this year’s Opening Ceremony, beginning at : p.m. with remarks from UVI President David Hall. Following this, we have the Ulla F. Muller Elementary School Phantastic Panthers Cheer and Dance Team at : p.m., St. John Dancers at p.m., Mungo Niles Cultural Dancers at : p.m., a Car Show at : p.m., Shaw HP from – p.m., UVI Royalty and other special appearances at : p.m., Cool Session Brass from :-: p.m.

The Reichhold Center, Happy Times Entertainment and the V.I. National Guard have taken great strides to ensure that attending families have an enjoyable experience by offering a wide array of attractions and activities tailored to their needs. These include giant dominoes, mini-golf, face painting, bounce houses, yard games, Carnival headpiece demonstrations courtesy of Anthony Felix, as well as Boy Scout demonstrations of how to build tents. Furthermore, the V.I. Children’s Museum will be on hand to provide additional entertainment for kids of all ages. The organizers are continuously striving to surpass expectations and create unique events with each iteration.

Scientific experimentation involving bubbles will be available for teens to view interactive displays of the University of the Virgin Islands’ academic programs in the Academic Tent. Food lovers should park their lawn chairs near the food tent for a buffet of delightful dishes, such as pick-up saltfish and pumpkin fritters, barbecue chicken, salmon *****, stewed chicken, kallaloo, and various sides such as vegan and Ital options. An additional tent will be adorned with cakes, tarts, sweet breads and more desserts crafted by home bakers and local chefs. Moreover, one should not overlook the native drink table and Chef’s Corner.

The “Afternoon on the Green” event will feature cooking demonstrations, allowing attendees to sample various food items at $ per taste and vote for their favorites. In addition to an overall prize for the top vote-getter, there will be first place prizes for the top-three in each of the following categories: main dishes, seafood, vegetarian dishes, soups, side dishes, bread, pastries/sweets, and native drinks. Numerous additional prizes will also be available, with all cooks receiving a reusable 'Afternoon on the Green’ shopping tote. All proceeds from the event will support the Edd Thomas Volunteer Scholarship, which is awarded to two high school seniors from Charlotte Amalie High School and Ivanna.

In conclusion, the University of the Virgin Islands’ Academic Tent and Food Tent will offer a wealth of interactive academic displays and delicious Caribbean dishes. Food lovers should make sure to save some room for the desserts at Chef’s Corner. From stewed chicken to native rum drinks, the event is sure to keep everyone coming back for more.
