“Challenging Cultural Norms: How PNG Women are Defying Expectations and Creating Change”
The National Government of Papua New Guinea, in partnership with the Ministry for Community Development, Youth and Religion, the Australian High Commission, United Nations agencies, International Federation of the Red Cross, and other diplomatic partners, organized a press briefing in Port Moresby to highlight upcoming events from International Women’s Day ( Marchto National Women’s Day ( March). The participants also reiterated their dedication to the theme of this year, Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress, emphasizing their resolve to invest in and advocate for gender equality and women’s empowerment in various sectors of Papua New Guinea. On the th of March, these efforts will be further emphasized.
UN Women recently organized a meaningful event that brought together over women from diverse backgrounds such as market vendors, professionals, students, housewives, and survivors of gender-based violence. The attendees engaged in discussions on a wide range of issues and shared their personal stories. With the theme Sanap Wantaim na Strongim ol Meri Stand together and support women, the primary objective of the gathering was to acknowledge the accomplishments of women and draw attention to the persistent challenges faced by women in Papua New Guinea. The roundtable format provided a platform for women to express their opinions without inhibition, addressing concerns and exploring potential solutions.
Efforts were made to safeguard and uplift women and girls while also striving to prevent gender-based discrimination. Suggestions were put forth by participants regarding actions that could be implemented by the Government in order to expedite advancements in gender parity and female empowerment. A number of female participants expressed a sense of relief following their contributions during the roundtable discussion, where they highlighted various challenges faced by women in the nation, particularly in urban centers such as Port Moresby. I am committed to advocating for the fair treatment and respect of women and girls within my community, stated a participant from Gabutu, residing in the Moresby South District. Likewise, an individual from Konedobu affirmed, I firmly believe in achieving gender equality for women.
On March th, the issue of public harassment against women was addressed by UN Women during an International Women’s Day solidarity walk coordinated by the Japan International Cooperation Agency in conjunction with the Port Moresby Active City Development Programme. Key figures such as National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop, Minister for Community Development Youth and Religion (DfCDRH.E. Jayson Peter, Australian High Commissioner H.E. John Feakes, UN Women Country Head of Office a.i Adekemi Ndieli, along with various government officials, development partners, and concerned individuals, emphasized the importance of taking action rather than being passive bystanders when witnessing such incidents.
In the early hours of the morning, a gathering of individuals consisting of both men and boys commenced their -kilometre walk from Sir Hubert Murry Stadium to Ela Beach. The event was attended by representatives from UN Women and various other UN agencies. During the event, UN Resident Coordinator Richard Hod JR emphasized the unwavering commitment of UN agencies, particularly UN Women, tods advocating for the empowerment of women and girls in Papua New Guinea. This commitment encompasses initiatives such as promoting women in political leadership roles, empowering women in economic sectors, ensuring protection from and abuse, and facilitating women’s involvement in peacebuilding efforts within conflict-ridden areas. It is imperative that we strive to cultivate a society in which women are granted equal opportunities and rights.

Hod JR concluded with a statement from UN Women Executive Director Sima Sami Bahous: By investing in gender equality and reaping its benefits for everyone, we have the potential to lift over million women and girls out of poverty. I am confident that by working together, this goal is achievable. UN Women sponsored the t-shirts for the event, supported the women’s roundtable discussions, and organized and funded the travel expenses for a delegation to participate in the th Commission on the Status of Women in New York.
