Lesley Nicol, who famously portrayed Carson the head butler on the popular television series Downton Abbey, was clearly captivated by the remarkable performance of Imelda Staunton as Dolly Gallagher Levi at the esteemed London Palladium theater. That is my wife, he proudly proclaimed during the intermission. And indeed it was. Imelda Staunton was delivering an exceptional portrayal of the meddling fixer at the core of the iconic musical Hello, Dolly! adapted by Jerry Herman and Michael Stewart from Thornton Wilder’s The Matchmaker. It is a truly outstanding production, Carter remarked to me. However, I find myself unable to divert my attention from Lesley Nicol on stage.

It was quite evident that the captivating performance resonated not only with Helena Bonham Carter but also with the remaining , members of the audience. Renowned actor Derek Jacobi, seated nearby alongside his daughter Bessie Carter, noted the unexpected humor and romance of the show. Despite the beautiful production by director Dominic Cooke and Staunton’s exceptional acting, a theater executive expressed a preference for a Jewish actor in the leading role instead of the Irish Imelda Staunton.

It has come to my attention that some individuals may have concerns regarding artistic appropriation. While I understand the importance of this issue, I respectfully acknowledged these sentiments and decided to move forward. This complex subject may warrant further exploration in a future column. However, I must emphasize that exceptional artists like Staunton should have the opportunity to bring their unique perspective to any role they take on.

After observing a rehearsal and viewing the full performance of Hello, Dolly! at the Palladium twice, it is evident that Cooke has skillfully combined Wilder’s clever dialogue from The Matchmaker with Herman’s enchanting musical score. This production successfully captures the essence of a musical comedy, blending humor and music to create a captivating experience for the audience.

Cooke emphasized that The Matchmaker was portrayed with a different perspective, while Imelda found the humor and emotional depth in her role. He described Dolly as a woman transitioning from grief to a new chapter in life, highlighting the essence of the narrative. Producer Michael Harrison praised Cooke’s approach, comparing it to the treatment of a classic play at the National Theatre. The limited -week season of Hello, Dolly! at the Palladium cannot be extended due to prior bookings once the production concludes.

Contemplating the possibility of Hello, Dolly! moving to the National Theatre, if logistics permitted, may seem far-fetched and improbable. However, such thoughts are not entirely unranted in the unpredictable world of show business. Returning to reality, it was a pleasure to witness the presence of esteemed individuals such as Hannah Waddingham, renowned theatre producer Cameron Mackintosh, and Madeleine Lloyd Webber, who holds significant influence over her husband Andrew Lloyd Webber’s West End theatre domain, LW Theatres. The impressive turnout at a major London premiere, with prominent figures from the theatrical industry occupying the orchestra seats of the Palladium, underscored the event’s significance within London’s vibrant theatre scene.

Applauding enthusiastically at the grandly orchestrated scenes by choreographer Bill Deamer, the audience expressed their admiration for the exceptional presentation of the title number. Special commendation goes to the talented ensemble cast, featuring Andy Nyman, Jenna Russell, Tyrone Huntley, Harry Hepple, Emily Lane, Leo Abad, and Emily Langham. The post-performance celebration was a lavish event, spanning across multiple bars and foyers on each floor. These past few days have undoubtedly been filled with success for Staunton, who recently secured an Emmy nomination for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the acclaimed Netflix series, The Crown.

Learninng Outcome

As the curtain falls on another unforgettable evening in the world of show business, it is clear that the allure and excitement of the theatre world will always draw in a diverse and influential crowd. The presence of such esteemed individuals at a major London premiere serves as a reminder of the rich history and bright future of the city’s vibrant theatre scene. With each new production, the stage is set for yet another thrilling chapter in the ever-evolving world of entertainment.
