As the Chief Executive Officer of Atlas Surgical Group, a prominent Ambulatory Surgical Center consortium in the United States and the author of Success in Ambulatory Surgery Centers and The Healthcare Entrepreneur, I often find myself reflecting on the words of Martin Luther King Jr.: “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” In my capacity as a healthcare industry leader, I am frequently queried about the fundamental principles required for sustained success. I label these principles as the C’s of Life.

The concept of traversing life being akin to sailing across an expansive ocean is playfully acknowledged here. Each C symbolizes a significant milestone specific to every stage of life. Failing to achieve these milestones within the designated time frames may hinder your progress in the constant pursuit of success. From one’s twenties to their sixties, employing these tactics can offer direction in making decisions and taking steps towards a rewarding and prosperous career. In your twenties, focus on shaping your identity. As it has been wisely said, Your work will consume a substantial portion of your life, and genuine contentment can only be achieved by pursuing what you truly believe in.

In order to achieve exceptional work, it is essential to have a passion for what you do. – Steve Jobs. The period of one’s twenties is a crucial time marked by exploration and self-exploration. It serves as an opportunity to establish one’s identity. As one transitions from the sheltered environment of adolescence and education into the broader world, there arises the chance to test out various careers, ideologies, and ways of life. Instead of merely discovering oneself, this phase is about actively shaping one’s identity through professional endeavors. As an illustration, commencing my twenties as a fresh medical graduate, I dedicated the ensuing years to gaining experience in the field.

My specialized training in residency and completion of various fellowships have greatly enhanced my clinical skills and prepared me for a successful career as a seasoned medical specialist. Embrace the challenges and opportunities that come with this process of growth; remember, this is just the initial outline of your life’s great work.

As one transitions into their thirties, there is a shift in focus from creation to control. With the wisdom and experiences gained in one’s twenties, it becomes imperative to take charge of the direction of one’s life. This period marks a time for establishing a solid foundation in one’s career. Achieving financial stability becomes paramount, along with aligning personal and professional objectives. It is essential to streamline ineffective elements and fortify successful ones in order to refine the structure of one’s life. Efficiently managing health, finances, and relationships can significantly influence the overall trajectory of one’s life.

Entering your forties is akin to assuming the helm of your life’s vessel after determining its course. Taking inspiration from Oprah Winfrey’s insight that Leadership is about empathy, now is the moment to step into a commanding role. As you have established your identity and seized control, it is now your turn to guide and motivate. In this decade, make the most of your knowledge and insights to effect substantial change within your professional circles. Whether it involves spearheading initiatives or offering guidance to those around you, embrace the opportunity to lead and shape the future.

The moral

As we transition into our thirties, the shift from creation to control becomes all the more crucial. This period presents an opportunity to take ownership of our lives, prioritize our goals, and make intentional choices that align with our values. By establishing a solid foundation in our careers, achieving financial stability, and cultivating relationships that support our growth, we can set ourselves up for long-term success and fulfillment. By focusing on efficient management of our health, finances, and relationships, we can shape the trajectory of our lives in a positive and meaningful way.
